Tips for Gaining Followers on Twitter

Tips for Gaining Followers on TwitterAs a nonprofit organization, your resources may be limited, but social media may give you the boost you need.

Twitter is a great platform for your voice to be heard. You may not “get” the point of Twitter and think it’s not necessary, but having an online voice is actually priceless. The best way for people to read what you have to say is to gather followers. Here is a good strategy for adding followers on your nonprofit organization’s Twitter.

  1. Twitter Header Photo

One of the very first things that people will see is your profile picture. You want people to see your brand and your business. This ultimately shows everyone who you are about–if you have a mediocre picture, people will be less inclined to follow you.

  1. Tweet

The more tweets you send out, the more people will find and follow you. Tweeting once a day is a must, but ideally, you want to tweet once every 5 hours. The more you tweet, the more people that will be able to find you, and the more followers you will attain.

  1. Retweet, heart, and reply!
  • Retweet: When you see something you like, you can “retweet” it to share this content with your followers. This also lets the original Tweeter know you are interested in what they are saying.
  • Heart: Similar to Facebook’s “like” system. If you like something, give it a heart.
  • Reply: If people are reaching out to your NPO’s Twitter, be sure to reply! This shows you’re an active user and care about what your followers have to say.

(Take note: As great as Twitter is, it is also a Petri dish for internet trolls–people who use the anonymity of the internet to cower behind. Do your best to ignore and block any and all trolls.)
