Michael Thomas, Marketing Communications Consultant at TIAA-CREF

Michael Thomas joined the board in 2013 as a new member. He is a marketing professional in Denver, CO with over 20 years of experience in Financial Services. He has a wealth of management experience with an extensive writing background. His specialties: Management, copy writing, public relations, marketing, training, FINRA Series 6, 26 & 63 registered. Currently, Michael is responsible for the development and execution of marketing programs and communication strategies for TIAA-CREF’s institutional partners. He is responsible for overseeing participant communications and executing timely, measurable, action-based marketing campaigns. He is responsible for analyzing client data to evaluate participant behavioral trends; and measure, compile and review campaign effectiveness. Previously Michael worked for Great-West and was responsible for the leadership and overall management and direction of the Government Markets marketing business unit. This team oversees the strategic and tactical execution of marketing communications plans to Great-West’s largest government clients who include states, counties and municipalities. In his prior role, Michael was a Communication Consultant in the National Accounts segment of Great-West and was responsible for the management and executions of marketing campaigns for large 401(k) plans.

Michael joined Great-West March 2011 and has been in the financial services market since 1995, with a concentration in retirement products, marketing, and sales support. He believes each participant should be given meaningful support, tools, and education resources to ensure retirement readiness. Michael currently holds FINRA Series 6, Series 26 and Series 63 registrations.

Charles Hewitt, Claims Technical Director, Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group

Chuck Hewitt is a veteran claims executive with over 45 years of management experience at both national and regional carriers. He is currently the Claims Technical Director of the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group in Santa Cruz, California. Before taking his current position, he was under contract to the California Insurance Commissioner to wind up the affairs of the former Golden Eagle Insurance Company, and prior to that he held successive executive positions with Liberty Mutual, Western Employers, Industrial Indemnity and Zenith Insurance Companies. Chuck has been a frequent speaker at conferences sponsored by the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, the Workers’ Compensation Defense Counsel Association, the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters, the Harmonie Group, and Lorman Education Services. He is a past president of the Los Angeles Claim Managers’ Council, the 1997 past president of the Pacific Claim Executives Association, past national co-chair of the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters National Advisory Council (on which he still sits), a board member of the Registered Professional Adjusters Association, a board member of the Colorado Nonprofit Insurance Agency, a Fellow of the Claims & Litigation Management Alliance, and the current Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County.

Chuck resides in Soquel, California with his wife Mary. Besides doting on their 3 children and 7 grandchildren, they like to travel, play Bridge and tend to their Shih Tzu, Lucy.

John D. Karen, Finance Director, Warren Village – Board Treasurer

John joined the Board in 2012 as a new member and now serves as Board treasurer. John has 18 years of nonprofit financial responsibilities. In fall of 2013 John joined Warren Village as Director of Finance where he continues to use his financial expertise. Prior to Warren Village John was the director of finance for Clinica Tepeyac Inc., 2010-2013 and was responsible for management of all internal administrative functions. From 1999-2009 John was the owner of Kenannah Enterprises Inc, a collision repair and refinishing company. He served as a board member of the Automotive Service Association and also served as their treasure. From 1993- 1997 John was part of a Fortune 500 fast growth company that provided software consulting and training services for users of Oracle database and related emerging technologies. John also held the position of Chief Financial Officer at Miaco Corporation from 1993- 1997 where he helps lead revenue growth from $2.5M to $16.5M. John’s community work includes serving as Treasure and Board Member of a $7M nonprofit corporation proving vocational rehabilitation and employment services to individuals with mental, emotional, physical and economic challenges. Johns holds an MBA, Finance from the University of Colorado, B.A. Northern State University, SD and is a designated CPA.

Juan Botello, Director of Finance and Operations, Graland Country Day School – Board President

Juan Botello joined Graland Country Day School as Director of Finance and Operations in 2009. Prior to his current position, Juan served Mile High United Way as chief financial officer since 2000. He previously worked in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors as Director of Finance at Allied Jewish Federations of Colorado and MIS, Inc. (a software development company). The Colorado Association elected Juan to the Board of Directors in 2005 and elected him as chair in 2010; he also served on the Executive Committee and the Finance Committee, of which he is past chair. Juan also served as an advisory board member for the University of Northern Colorado Nonprofit Management Program, guest instructor for the Regis University Masters of Nonprofit Management Program and a financial issues committee member for United Way of America.

David Livingston, CEO, Judi’s House

David has 26 years of business finance, commercial banking and real estate management experience. Currently, he is the CEO of Judi’s House. Formerly, he was the CFO of HealthTeamWorks in Lakewood, Colorado. Past positions held include Denver President of United Western Bank, Bank President for Guaranty Bank and Trust, and Trust Officer with J.P. Morgan Chase (formerly known as Bank One). David has been a Board Director and past Board Chair for The Colorado Health Foundation since 2004. Mr. Livingston is also immediate past Chairman of the Board for HealthOne Hospitals, and holds advisory board positions for Denver Museum of Nature and Science and is Board Treasurer for Ace Scholarship Foundation.

Cheryl Jones, Vice President & Account Executive, AGIA – Board Secretary

Cheryl has been in the insurance industry for over 25 years and with AGIA since 1996. For the past 16 years she has been the Account Executive for the Unemployment Services Trust (UST). Cheryl is responsible for the personal sales contacts, new business partnerships with state and national nonprofits and the continued growth and success of the UST program. She is one of the key people representing UST and works with the Executive Director, trustees and the 75 UST sponsors to make sure nonprofits around the country know of their choice when it comes to funding unemployment. She also works with the American Chamber of Commerce Executives as the Vice President in charge of their group insurance plans.

Renny Fagan, President and CEO Colorado Nonprofit Association (2008)

Renny joined the Colorado Nonprofit Association in February 2008. He will continue the Association’s efforts in assisting nonprofits during the recession, and he hopes to work with business and state and local governments to increase the nonprofit sector’s reach across Colorado. In addition to his overall supervisory responsibilities and provides principal leadership in the areas of public policy, governance and budget. For the last two years, Renny has served as the state director for U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar and Sen. Michael Bennet. Renny is a former state legislator, head of the Colorado Department of Revenue, deputy attorney general, and volunteer with El Pomar Foundation’s Award for Excellence program. Through the course of his career, he has served on numerous boards and councils addressing a wide range of community need s. A Colorado native, he grew up in the Pikes Peak region and has resided in the Denver Metro area for the last 15 years. He received his B.A. in Political Science at the University of Chicago and his law degree from Northwestern University.
