3 Common Messaging Challenges That Nonprofits Face

Messaging should be focused on what is heard, not necessarily what you say.

A potential funder needs to be engaged in the cause. A strong narrative can get your potential funders in the door, but now they’re really listening to what you have to say. Not everyone loves to give money away at just any cause that asks, you have to persuade them at the three levels. WHY, WHERE, and HOW. Here are three common messaging challenges that nonprofits face.

  1. No simplicity. The great physicist Richard Feynman was known as a great explainer. Being able to take the most mind-boggling concepts of physics and being able to explain them with such simplicity, even a 5-year-old could understand the basics. Without simplicity, the message gets lost and your organization loses yet another potential funder.
  2. No WOW factor. The WOW factor is one factor that you should never overlook. The reaction that people have to your business should not be, “Oh.” Nor should it be a yawn. It needs to be, “WOW!”
  3. Frame your income, not the impact. Many people say something like, “We need funds for staff salaries, administration, etc.” Nothing bores people more than having to hear about the boring parts of your income allocation. You should be communicating how ALL of your funding goes to specific projects, priorities, and programs. It’s not lying, it’s telling people what they want to hear for the greater good of your organization and important cause.

Sending your message to funders and donors is just as important as having a comprehensive message. Contact the experts at Colorado Nonprofit Insurance Agency, part of HUB International in Denver, Colorado at 303-894-0298.We will work with you to ensure you are getting the most out of your coverage.
