Tips for Nonprofits on Using Social Media to Build Supporter Relationships

Build meaningful relationships through social media networks.

We are currently living in a digital age. Now, more than ever, people are just a thumb swipe away from discovering businesses, donating to charities, and buying products online. The use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube continues to remain at an all-time high – But is your nonprofit making the most of these social media networks? Organizations can leverage social media to build meaningful relationships with their supporters, from donors, influencers, and activists.

Engaging with Your Influencers:

  • Do your research. Learn about the influencer first – Read their blog, posts, and if their passions match your cause or campaign.
  • First, greet an influencer rather than diving in and asking them for something. Start by commenting on their posts and sharing their material.
  • Make it easy. Influencers are busy. Once you ask them to do something, make it easy. Don’t overwhelm them or add in too many steps. They will be more inclined to help if you present the task as simple.

Engaging with Your Activists:

  • Show the love. Showing a little bit of social love to your activists is the key to keeping them engaging in your campaign. This can present itself in the form of retweeting their posts, sharing their status, or highlighting a new activist every week and thanking him/her for the work they do.
  • Encourage others. Continue to inspire and motivate others through social media by bringing current activists in the loop. The person interested in getting involved may jump on board when they hear from a current activist.

Engaging with Donors:

  • Show interest. Show interest in your donors by following them on social media before you ask them for another gift. Simply sharing their post is an easy win because it’s so easy to do and it reminds them of why they gave you to.
  • Thank them. Above all, thank your donors for their support in helping you get one step further to achieve your goals. A sincere ‘thank you’ can go a long way!
