A Perfect Partnership for Colorado Nonprofits
The Alliance of Nonprofits for Insurance, Risk Retention Group (ANI) & Colorado Nonprofit Insurance Agency

Did you know that Colorado Nonprofit Insurance Agency (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Colorado Nonprofit Association) is the only insurance agency in Colorado that has access to ANI?

Did you know that ANI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit?

That's right - ANI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose only mission is to be a stable source of liability insurance for the nonprofit sector. In cooperation with Colorado Nonprofit Insurance Agency, ANI presently insures more than 650 Colorado nonprofits, and we are growing. ANI issues insurance policies written specifically for nonprofits. We work with Colorado Nonprofit Insurance Agency to provide risk management and loss control services, as well as insurance, to help our member nonprofits operate as safely as possible.

Good risk management doesn't have to be daunting. It is a state of mind. It is a keen awareness of the workings of your organization and how you interact with your clients, your staff, your volunteers, and members of the public. Good managers and leaders of nonprofits put policies and procedures into place to anticipate what may go wrong with these interactions. With that in mind, here are some risk management tips that you should consider:

  • Train your staff and volunteers on how to conduct themselves so that injury will be avoided whenever possible and properly handled when it does occur.
  • Trip and falls account for 30% of the claims against ANI general liability policies. Many of these can be avoided. For example, it is a great practice to put orange hazard cones out if you are cleaning or waxing the floor. Also, take a fresh look at your surroundings and if there is clutter in pathways, you should remove it.
  • Make sure that individuals who are driving vehicles for your organization have been properly trained. There is a big difference between driving a small, private passenger vehicle and a large truck or van for an organization.
  • Make sure your personnel handbook is up to date in regards to both state and federal laws, and stick to your policies and procedures when taking any employment action. ANI member nonprofits that purchase Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance have access to unlimited labor and employment risk management assistance, as well as a free review of their personnel handbook.

Good leaders recognize that risk management is not something you have to do to keep your insurance company happy, but that it is a discipline to help you do whatever you do, the best you possibly can.

COBRA Subsidies to Lapse at End of the Month

COBRA subsidies to assist unemployed workers pay the premiums on their employer-provided health insurance are scheduled to expire, yet again, on Aug. 31, 2011. The program provides subsidies to pay 65% of premiums for up to 15 months following involuntary unemployment.

The subsidy program was originally passed as part of President Barack Obama's stimulus package in February 2009 as a way to assist the unemployed during the height of the recession. The program was later extended several times, the most recent of which applied to workers who became unemployed on or before May 31, 2010. That extension means workers who lost their jobs in May 2010 will see their 15 months of COBRA eligibility expire at the end of this month. Once the COBRA subsidies expire, the unemployed must pay 102% of the full cost of employer-sponsored coverage in order to continue benefits.

Congress is currently out of session until after Labor Day. Regardless, due to the current focus in Washington on reducing the budget deficit, it is unlikely that the COBRA subsidy program will be extended.
